Sensitive Skin? 10 Ingredients to Avoid in Skincare Products

Sensitive Skin? 10 Ingredients to Avoid in Skincare Products

Navigating skincare can feel like a minefield, especially if you have sensitive skin. One wrong ingredient, and you’re dealing with redness, dryness, irritation, breakouts, or even an allergic reaction. As someone who formulates skincare products and lives with sensitive skin myself, I’ve learned what to avoid—and I’m here to share that knowledge with you.

Top Ingredients to Avoid for Sensitive Skin

  1. Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used to prevent mold and bacteria in products. While they extend shelf life, they can disrupt hormones and irritate sensitive skin. That’s why all Chance of Sunny products are paraben-free.

  2. Sulfates
These strong cleansing agents create a satisfying lather but strip your skin of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. We never use sulfates in our Bath & Body Washes because I want your skin to feel clean—not stripped.

  3. Synthetic Fragrances
Fragrances might make a product smell amazing, but they’re a common irritant, often containing undisclosed chemicals. At Chance of Sunny, we use either no scent or naturally sourced essential oils, carefully balanced to be skin-safe.

  4. Synthetic Dyes
Dyes add color but offer no skin benefits. Many are made from petroleum or coal tar and can trigger irritation. You won’t find synthetic dyes in any of our products.

  5. Phthalates
Phthalates help products last longer and maintain flexibility, but they’re linked to allergic reactions and potential hormone disruption. We make sure all our formulations are phthalate-free.

  6. Alcohol (Denatured or Drying Types)
Not all alcohols are harmful, but drying types like SD alcohol or isopropyl alcohol can weaken your skin barrier. This is why we avoid them in Chance of Sunny products—your skin deserves to feel hydrated and balanced.

  7. Essential Oils (in High Concentrations)
Even natural ingredients can be problematic if used improperly. Essential oils like citrus or peppermint can irritate sensitive skin in high concentrations. I’m very intentional about essential oil dilution to ensure safe and gentle use.

  8. Retinoids (in Potent Formulas)
While effective for anti-aging, retinoids can cause redness and peeling. If you have sensitive skin, look for milder formulations or use sparingly.

  9. Formaldehyde Releasers
These preservatives are often found in moisturizers and shampoos but can cause allergic reactions. I’ve made sure Chance of Sunny products are free from these hidden irritants.

  10. Harsh Scrubbing Agents
Exfoliants with sharp particles like walnut shells can create micro-tears, leading to inflammation. Instead, I recommend gentle chemical exfoliants with AHAs or BHAs.

Why I Created Chance of Sunny

When I started formulating skincare, I did it in my kitchen—always testing products on my own sensitive skin first. I was determined to create gentle, effective products that avoided harsh ingredients. Essential oils, for example, can be amazing but tricky, so I formulated both scented and unscented lines to offer options for everyone. Even then, I always encourage patch testing, just to be safe.

All Chance of Sunny products are dermatologist-tested and pediatrician-approved, designed to be as soothing and effective as possible for sensitive skin. Our Bath & Body Washes are sulfate-free for a gentle cleanse, and our Hand & Body Lotions are free from parabens and synthetic fragrances, locking in hydration without irritation.

A Skincare Routine You Can Trust

  1. Cleanse: Start with our Original or Lavender Bath & Body Wash for a gentle, non-stripping cleanse.
  2. Moisturize: Follow with our Hand & Body Lotion to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
  3. Nourish: Seal in moisture with our Bath & Body Oil for silky, smooth skin.

Sensitive skin doesn’t have to limit your skincare options. With Chance of Sunny, you get safe, thoughtful formulations that let you care for your skin without compromise. I’ve made sure every product helps you feel good—both inside and out.
