Everyone should have a physical space where they go to relieve stress and calm down. Whether it is your bedroom or your backyard patio, these spaces are necessary for resetting and grounding oneself.
However, sometimes we let the problems of the outside world leak into our comfort spaces, thus stripping them of their purpose. When this happens, it is important to take some time to filter the clutter, both physical and intangible, from one’s comfort space.
Here are some ways to reset your comfort space to keep it from becoming just another place of stress and anxiety.
- Physically Clean the Space
-
- Set a timer for 15 minutes and get rid of all trash and stray items.
-
Dust, vacuum, and clear surfaces to literally empty the room of its untidy energy
2. Adjust the Atmosphere
-
- Don't use overly bright lights. Instead, go for warm lights and/or candles that create a cozier, more ambient environment.
-
Spray calming scents throughout the space to activate the senses.
-
Remove thin, worn-out fabrics and replace them with softer, fluffier items like pillows, blankets, and rugs.
3. Change the Layout
-
-
Move the furniture around to create a fresh look.
-
Introduce houseplants or flowers near windows to bring the room to life.
-
4. Establish Boundaries
-
- A comfort space is for comfort, not stress. Keep work and other stresses/activities out.
-
Quickly clean the space at the end of each session, so it is ready for you the next time you need it.
-
Make your space a no-screen zone. Keeping technology out will eliminate distractions and keep you grounded in the space around you.
These are just a handful of ways one can ensure their comfort space is effective, cozy, and safe. If you ever feel yourself getting overwhelmed in your space, try these adjustments to make things peaceful again.
